“Create a family portrait. Draw a picture of yourself. What do you look like?”
Have your child draw themselves, creating a self-portrait. Encourage them to observe themselves in the mirror and have them tell you what they see. How do they see themselves?
Process
Give your child the opportunity to look at themselves in a mirror and reflect on what they see.
Have child assist in preparing their art space (paper and black marker)
Invite them to draw a self-portrait.
Encourage them along the way. Every child will be at different points of fine motor development and artistic skill. Allow your child to be free to create. Always encourage proper tool grasp (pincer grasp; the coordination of the index finger and thumb to hold an item. ) when using drawing tools.
Materials
paper of any size
black marker (washable for little kiddos)
access to a mirror

Observe yourself in a mirror in your home. What do you see?
What do you look like? How many eyes, noses, legs, arms do you have?
Help your parent get your art materials ready. What a big helper you are!
Start drawing your self-portrait!
Can you sign your name or initials at the bottom of your artwork?
Parent role
Give your child access to a mirror
Ask them what they see.
Have your child help you set up their work space.
Invite them to start drawing themselves and creating a self-portrait.
Remind them to use a proper pincer grasp. Don't stress if they aren’t doing this yet, just continue to encourage this skill as they explore with fine motor activities.
