Nature Hunt

Time Frame: 1-2 hours

“Go on a nature scavenger hunt. Use this tally chart to record how many of each nature item you observe.  What item did you find the most of? ”

Take your child on a nature walk.  Bring along the tally scavenger printable and record what you see along the way. Make a tally of each item seen along the way and record the total amount.

Process

  1. Help your child pack their scavenger hunt backpack; tally printable, pencil, magnifying glass, binoculars if they have them, water, snack

  2. Go for a nature walk.

  3. Fill out the tally chart along the way.  Have your child make a prediction about what nature item will be the most common.

  4. Enjoy your outside time as long as everyone is having fun, engaged and happy.  Have a snack and speak about what you have found.

  5. Come back and add up your totals! 

Materials

  • Tally chart printable

  • Pencil, clipboard or something hard to write on.

  • Nature walk accessories; magnifying glass, binoculars, water, snack, bug spray, hat

  • Positive attitude and a curious mind!


Child role

  • Pack up your nature bag

  • Go on a nature walk with your family

  • Search like scientists. Find items from the tally chart and record what you see.

  • Explore, have a snack and ask questions

  • Come home and record your totals.

  • What was the most common nature item in your walk?

Parent role

  • Help child pack up their nature bag

  • Explain what a tally is and what it is used for 

  • Take your child(ren) on a nature walk!  All kiddos can help with this activity.

  • Have fun, be scientists and search for the scavenger items

  • Help your child record found items on their tally sheet

  • Enjoy the outdoors!

  • Help your child add up their tally chart and print the number if possible.
