What’s in a Name?

Time Frame: 1 hour

Your child will be so excited to make their own plaque! Can your child print their name yet? This a good time to start! Tip; Have them print it using proper upper and lower case style, just as they would read or see it. It will come with practice practice practice.

“ What does your name mean? Who named you and why were you given your name?

“Let’s make our own name plaques representing what makes us unique and special.”

Process

  1. Review the book Alma from quiet time.  

  2. Discuss your child’s name and answer the following questions directed to them, “Who named you and why were you given your name? What does your name mean? What is it about you that makes you unique?

  3. Gather your own bases of any size or shape for the name plaque (thick paper, wood board, canvas etc) or print out the printable. Every family member can make one!

  4. Have your child print their name on their surface with paint or black sharpie

  5. Encourage your child to draw pictures, patterns and add stickers or crafts supplies (feathers, pom poms, nature items) that express who they are

  6. Use markers, colored pencils or paint to add colour to their name plaques.

  7. Display your family’s plaque and have your child share their name with friends and family.

Materials

    • Paper or Wood surface size 4x6 suggested

    • black sharpie

    • crayons/pencil crayons/markers/paint

    • paintbrush

    • stickers/crafts supplies


Child role

  • Talk about the book called Alma with your parent

  • Chat with your parent about your name. Do you know why they chose your name? Do you know what it means?

  • Help your parent set up your art space.

  • Print your name as best as you can. It’s ok if you need help.

  • Paint or colour your plaque and add special stickers, and craft supplies that is available to you.

  • Have fun!

Parent role

  • Chat with your child about their name. What can you tell them about it?

  • Prepare art space and offer a variety of loose materials they can glue onto their

  • Have your child print their name or help them print their name hand over hand.

  • Give them the freedom to paint, colour and decorate their name. Have each family member make a plaque.

  • How does the plaque represent each person?
